About me, Terry Shortt-

Prince Edward County has always been home for generations of the Shortt family, but it is where my wife and I built our life, raised our family and became part of a community we deeply value. As we celebrate our 47th anniversary, we could not be prouder of our three children and four grandchildren—and I feel a profound responsibility to help protect the County they will inherit.

My decision to run for Mayor is rooted in a lifetime of living, working and serving here. I know what makes this community special, and I understand the challenges we face. I am running to protect our way of life, strengthen our communities and ensure Prince Edward County remains a place where future generations can build lives of their own.

In 2022, I finished as the runner-up in the mayoral election. This time, I’m asking County residents to help us take the next step—and choose the experienced, steady leadership needed to move Prince Edward County forward.

Experience with Results

I bring 13 years of municipal council experience and 33 years as a business owner to the role of Mayor.

My public service includes thirteen years as a Sophiasburgh Township Councilor.
During that time, I served:

  • Two years as Vice-Chair of the Planning Committee

  • Four years as Chair of the Planning Committee

  • Nine years as Chair of the County Recreation Board

  • Four years as Chair of the Community Development Committee

  • Two years as Council Representative on the Master Fire Plan Committee

These roles gave me practical experience creating and managing budgets, overseeing staff, navigating land-use and development issues, and finding workable solutions to complex challenges.

For 33 years, I owned and operated Terry Shortt Electrical Services Ltd. The company employed an average of 12 to 20 people—and as many as 54 on major projects—while serving local customers and large commercial clients throughout the Quinte region. When I retired, I sold the company to two longtime employees and supported them through the transition into business ownership.

Both business and public service have taught me the importance of accountability, responsible spending, practical leadership and treating people with respect. I believe leadership begins with listening, and I have always worked to remain open and accessible to the people I serve.

As Mayor, I will bring this experience to Shire Hall and provide the steady, informed leadership Prince Edward County needs to navigate today’s challenges and prepare for future opportunities.
